My story

Hey there.   My name is Mark Georgeson and welcome to my site.  The very short version of this story is that following a bike accident in 2018 resulting in a broken back, neck, pelvic bleed and brain injury and subsequent medical retirement from my job, I have been on a bit of a journey of recovery and would love to tell you my story.

The purpose of the blog is to tell you a wee bit about myself before the accident, a bit about the accident (although not too much!), take you through my rehabilitation so far and what I’ve learnt, and document progress as the journey continues. Oh and tell you about some new plans I have to get back to fitness (see the name of the website!) The problem/benefit of having crazy friends….I’ll let you decide;) And now to let you know about my setting up of a coaching business as the recovery develops.

Essentially this has been a story of hope and if you find one thing in my story that helps you through your own difficult moment in life or inspires you to go on your own personal quest to build a better quality of life I would be delighted.  Please get in touch (although I wouldn’t recommend trying too hard to get knocked off your bike by a van at 50mph!) There are easier ways to progress on your journey.

I have found that the people around you are amazing and the people you meet on the way generally have your best interests at heart. So stay positive:)

As you will have read in my blog over the last 8 years, Triathlon has had a big part to play in my recovery. I competed before my accident, and there is no doubt in my mind that because of that fitness that had seen me complete Iron Man Copenhagen in 2016, I was in a better place than most to recover from the multiple injuries, both physical and mental, that I suffered in 2018. It also provided me an amazing framework and motivation to recover. So much so that after being given a prognosis of maybe never walking again, I have since completed a few races as you will have read on this blog.

I have decided after 17 years of club coaching to take things to a new level and set up a one to one coaching business, Intensive Care 2 Celtman Coaching. From my coaching experience, race experience and life experience I think sports like triathlon can provide a fabulous physical and mental benifit to our quality of life. And with help and support from a coach, we can fit this into life through a balanced approach that can see us achieve our goals without it having a negative impact on the other important things in life such as family and work.

IC2C Coaching

IC2CC will offer an athlete centred approach to coaching, designed to maximise your performance and enjoyment in endurance sports whilst keeping your life balanced. Our coaching philosophy is very person centred. Our job as coaches is to understand what the persons goals and objectives are going forward, and adapt a training plan that will help them achieve this.

Experienced athletes are likely to have very focused performance goals for races, less experienced athletes are just discovering a new sport and everything in between.  As coaches we can help you navigate this exciting challenge and incorporate things into a sustainable life.  With the person centred approach you must take ownership and drive things forward.  We’ll ask lots of questions and help you plan something that works to help you achieve your goals.  Every single athlete is different across all aspects of the sport. There are broad approaches that remain consistent for everyone, but there will be many variations to consider.  And we would like to make engaging in the process a fun experience :)

Having coached for 17 years in a club environment, and competed in races from my first sprint triathlon in Perth, WA in 2008 to Celtman in 2025, I’ve decided to start this business to offer 121 coaching from my own knowledge and experience. I know how much triathlon has brought to my life, including the recovery from my accident, and I’d love to help other people experience it.

The How

Initial chat. Get in touch through my contact form, email or instagram and we can set up a time for a coffee or video call to see if my coaching approach is what you are looking for

If after the initial chat you are up for it, we can start the ball rolling. We will connect on Training Peaks. You can connect with me through a free account and this will form the main platform for me to schedule work outs for you, get feedback on the workouts (critical) and I can track your performance to make sure we are getting the balance right with training volume. We’ll be adopting a polarised training approach and I will be monitoring that through Training Peaks. Once we are connected on TP we will get together to have a proper chat and get to know each other. In advance of that chat I will provide you with some forms to have a look at and fill in. They will form the basis of our conversation as I understand your race history and goals, your experience with training and triathlon, your current benchmarks (swim, bike and run), your life style and its stressors and priorities, your strengths and weaknesses (sport and non sport), the time you have for training……etc, etc. It will seem like a lot, but the better I know you, the better I can coach you and I want to build a relationship based on openness and trust. Knowing your goals and time available also enables me to be specific with your training plan to ensure we can have you as fresh and ready for races. And as I’ve said already, having fun. My plan is to have 2 price points.

£100 a month for weekly catch ups on a call based on a 1/2 week training plan put in Training Peaks by IC2CC for the athlete; and

£140 a month for session by session feedback on WhatsApp and TP based on a 1/2 week training plan put in Training Peaks by IC2CC. This price point will mean we can shift sessions around depending on what is happening in your life. A basic strength programme will also be available focused on Triathlon.

Testing will be done at the outset to make sure all the zones are set correctly. Principally we will be using field tests to ascertain your pace and HR at Lactate Threshold on the track for running, Functional Threshold Power on the bike and Critical Swim Speed in the pool. Zones will be calculated from these field tests to set your workouts and track progress. We will redo the tests every 4-6 weeks to track progress in training and adjust zones as necessary.

As already stated the metrics are important, but how you are feeling based on RPE or perceived exertion of out 10 is also important. Some days due to stress, poor sleep or weather can lead to under performance compared to speed and power zones you are expecting, but 7/10 effort is always 7/10. We will use a balance of the 2 to make sure you are training at the right levels. That is why your feedback on Training Peaks is so important.

Conclusion

We’ve thrown a lot of information at you. Essentially we want to help you to become the best version of yourself as a runner or a triathlete. We will be athlete centred, get to know you and create an individualised training plan to help you achieve your goals. As we develop we want to create a community, offer nutritional advice and advice on race day plans too.

So if that all sounds like what you are looking for get in touch and get the ball rolling
